Dental Education
Dental Education in India is now well spread and available from almost all the states of India. Dentistry is a 4 year program followed by a 1 year internship. Admissions into Dental colleges take place after the 12th standard examination in the medical stream. There is an all India entrance exam on the basis of which admission is sought in any dental institution. There also are other multiple state level entrance exams for seats in state run dental colleges. There are close to 300 dental colleges in India and more than 90% of these are private institutions and the fees structures are considerably higher than the Govt funded colleges. The course content and curriculum remains the same across universities and states. The total number of seats for the dental stream is about 15,000 to 16,000. On graduation a B.D.S (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) degree is awarded. This is done only on completion of the internship. Those interested in pursuing further education can do so with the post graduate degree of M.D.S (Master of Dental Surgery) which is available in all the various streams of dentistry. The M.D.s is a three/four year program and admission is by an entrance exam and the fee structure varies tremendously between the state run and private institutions. If additional information is required it can be obtained by sending a query and a response will be generated in about 24 hours of time. |
