Description
The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of Turm Nova on gingival health when taken in the form of lozenges twice a day for three weeks and compare it with scores in the same subjects after cessation of usage of Turm Nova. The active ingredient of Turm Nova is curcumin which is very poorly absorbed through the gut. One of the best uptakes of curcumin is through the oral mucosa. Turm Nova lozenges deliver the maximum potential of curcumin using a protected patent technology. Curcumin is known to have strong anti bacterial as well as anti inflammatory properties. In this study an attempt is being made to see the effect of Turm Nova on gingivitis without any other parameters being changed and compare how the cessation of Turm Nova changes the GI and PI scores. The scores will be recorded by the operator without being aware if the subject is currently using Turm Nova. This is to eliminate bias while recording the score. The study would recruit 60 subjects and divide them into two cohorts of 30 each. An oral prophylaxis would be carried out and a full history taken and the baseline GI and PI scores would be taken. Patients with advanced periodontal disease exhibiting more than one site with pockets > 4 mm as well as patients with purulent exudation in more than one site will not be included in the study. After initial baseline recording of the scores all subjects in both groups, one group will be given Turm Nova to be used twice a day for 3 weeks and the other group will not be given anything. Both groups will be recalled after 3 weeks and the GI and PI scores recorded once again. Subsequent to this, the group using Turm Nova will be told to stop using it and the group which has not used Turm Nova so far will be given Turm Nova to be used twice a day. Both the groups will be recalled after another 3 weeks. and the GI and PI scores will be again checked for both the groups and the data subjected to statistical analysis. Suggested index for recording Gingival inflammation is the Loe and Sillness Index and the Quigley Hein index for plaque scores.
